Unlocking Battery Savings: WA and Federal Government Rebates Explained

With energy prices on the rise, many Australians are turning to solar battery storage to maximise their energy independence and reduce electricity bills. To support this transition, both the Western Australian (WA) state government and the federal government are offering generous rebates for home battery installations starting from 1 July 2025.

WA Residential Battery Scheme

The WA Residential Battery Scheme aims to make battery storage more accessible for households across the state. Under this initiative:

Additionally, the scheme offers no-interest loans to help cover the remaining costs of battery installation. The program is set to launch by 1 July 2025, with applications opening in phases. It's important to note that batteries installed before the scheme's commencement will not be eligible for rebates or loan funding.

Federal Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Complementing the state initiative, the federal government has introduced the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, a $2.3 billion plan to subsidise battery installations nationwide.

Key features include:

  • 30% up-front discount on the cost of battery systems.

  • Available to households with existing solar systems and those planning to install new ones.

  • No means testing, making it accessible to a broad range of Australians.

  • Expected savings of up to $2,300 annually on electricity bills for homes with both solar and battery setups.

This federal rebate is also scheduled to commence on 1 July 2025 and can be combined with state rebates for additional savings.

Maximising Your Savings: Stacking Rebates

Homeowners in WA have a unique opportunity to stack both state and federal rebates, significantly reducing the out-of-pocket costs for battery installations. For instance, a Synergy customer installing a 10 kWh battery could receive:

  • $5,000 from the WA state rebate.

  • $3,000 (assuming a $10,000 battery cost) from the federal rebate.

This combined $8,000 rebate brings the effective cost down to $2,000, making battery storage more affordable than ever.

Preparing for Application

While applications for these rebates are not yet open, it's advisable to start preparing:

  • Research approved battery systems and ensure they meet the eligibility criteria.

  • Obtain quotes from accredited installers familiar with both rebate programs.

  • Stay informed by regularly checking official government websites for updates on application processes and timelines.

The combined efforts of the WA state and federal governments present a significant opportunity for homeowners to invest in solar battery storage at a reduced cost. By taking advantage of these rebates, you can enhance your energy independence, contribute to a sustainable future, and enjoy substantial savings on your electricity bills.
